Let me tell you the fascinating story of the Château d’Amboise! Back in the 11th century, the Count of Anjou had a brilliant idea to build this castle on a hill overlooking the Loire River for defense. Fast forward to the 15th and 16th centuries, when Charles VII, Louis XII, and Francois I gave the castle a makeover fit for royalty.
Thanks to the artistic flair of Charles VIII and Francois I, the castle boasts a magnificent facade inspired by Italian art. In fact, Francois I was so enamored with Italian art that he invited the legendary Leonardo Da Vinci to join him in Amboise as his painter, architect, and engineer. Da Vinci made himself at home in the nearby Chateau du Clos Lucé, connected to the royal chateau by a secret underground passage.
After spending his final years in Amboise, Da Vinci was laid to rest in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert within the Château d’Amboise’s ramparts. Imagine the rich history and artistic legacy that echo through these ancient walls!
On a visit to the area, don’t miss the chance to explore the castle, soak in its history, and pay your respects to the great Leonardo Da Vinci. And for a truly delightful experience, why not stop by a few wineries and savor a delicious 3-course lunch during your tour?
